Active Investigation The Sun-Bleached Tapes

The Mystery

In 1995, a musician known only as Drift Harper disappeared somewhere in the Chihuahuan Desert. He left behind a trail of cassette tapes—scattered across thrift stores, flea markets, and abandoned vehicles from El Paso to Marfa.

The tapes contain music, field recordings, spoken word, and something else. Something that suggests Drift Harper found something out there in the desert. Or something found him.

The Archive

Tape Drift is an ongoing investigation into Drift Harper's disappearance and the mysterious recordings he left behind. We've collected fragments from across the Southwest, digitized degraded cassettes, and followed leads that go nowhere—and everywhere.
